Microsoft is closing two Chinese plants and laying off 9,000 workers

In a bid to streamline their production costs and restructure their newly acquired division of Nokia’s handset business, Microsoft is closing two Chinese plants and laying off close to 9,000 workers.

This is bad news for those in the Dongquan and Beijing sectors, but good news for Vietnam. Microsoft is focusing its efforts on Hanoi, Vietnam, to be the site of the newest factory it acquired in the Nokia deal. The bulk of the company’s phone production will be focused there. Microsoft acquired Nokia in a $7.5 billion dollar deal back in April.
