Sanchez, a Democrat, told supporters she would make the official anouncement at the Santa Ana Train Station besides alongside her husband, family, and friends. Her candidacy would up the ante in the Democratic primary, where California Attorney General Kamala Harris has already declared her intent to run and is a strong candidate. Sanchez does have a strong backing from the Latino community.

Sanchez is a veteran lawmaker and has served in Congress since 1997. She and her sister, Linda Sanchez, are the first siblings to serve concurrently in the U.S. House of Representatives. Sanchez has served on the Armed Services and Homeland Security committees and is considered an expert on foreign policy.
