In June,Tran pleaded guilty on June 9 to bribery of a public official. Tran was stationed at the Forward Operating Base in the city of Gardez and allowed the truck driver to leave without downloading nearly 12,000 gallons of fuel. When he returned to the U.S. in 2013, Tran used the money to buy a 2010 Dodge Challenger.
Tran also acknowledged taking at least $1,000 in cash from another member of his unit in exchange for Tran’s agreement not to report his colleagues for also taking cash bribes in exchange for fuel.
U.S. District Judge Beth L. Freeman of the Northern District of California on Tuesday also ordered Tran to pay $69,000 in restitution and to forfeit $11,437 as well as the vehicle that he purchased with bribe proceeds.
