Sometimes in life, it is the struggles that mold your character. For Monsignor Peter Bui, who just received the honorary title of “Chaplain to His Holiness,” that struggle included being one of hundreds of thousands of ‘boat people’ who escaped with his family during the 1975 exodus of Vietnam.

Msgr. Bui, who was based in Phoenix, AR, was ordained in 2003 and has lived and worked in Rome since 2011. He is fluent in Spanish, German, Italian, English and Vietnamese and has done mission work all over the world. The title “Chaplain to His Holiness” is an honorary title bestowed on priests in recognition of exemplary service to the Church. Prior to 2014, priests had to be older than 65 to receive this honor. Thanks to new rules instituted by Pope Francis, Msgr. Bui, who is 42, was able to accept this honor and designation.
