Rev. John-Nhan Tran, pastor of Mary Queen of Peace Church in Mandeville, is more than a man of the cloth; he is a man of his word. In August, the pastor, who lives in New Orleans, went to Oklahoma City to give Rev. Thanh Nguyen, associate pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral, his left kidney after he said he would. The two are old friends who attended seminary college together at St. Benedict near Covington.

They also attended Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans at the same time, but Tran was ordained in 1992, and Nguyen spent some time away from the seminary and became a priest eight years later.
Nguyen was sent to Oklahoma City, and Tran served at different churches in southeast Louisiana over the years. When they met up, Tran realized Nguyen had diabetes and offered to get tested once he knew Nguyen was on dialysis and waiting for a kidney.
On Aug. 17 of this year, the two pastors had the surgery and it was successful.
Tran says he was treated wonderfully during his four days in the hospital and his recuperation at Our Lady’s Cathedral rectory, where he and Nguyen had their meals together. They are both recovering and doing well.
