Cynthia Trinh, a former intellectual-property-lawyer-turned-photographer, captured a series of photos that are resonating with second generation Vietnamese-Americans.

The photos include black-and-white snapshots of low wage Asian laborers in New York City’s Chinatown and Midtown neighborhoods. Inspired by the New York Times expose on wage theft at nail salons, Trinh said she wanted to break the stereotype of Asians being model minorities. The series, titled “The Model Minority Reality” aimed to highlight many Asian-American stories that are not being told to the general public. Trinh wanted to show that Asian-Americans struggle, too, as an immigrant group in this country.
