Tan Duc Thanh Nguyen, who was a part of the notorious “Bali 9” group of drug smugglers, is now engaged to Lyudmyla Karpova, a 26-year-old from Italy. The two started writing to each other last December and have since fallen in love.

Karpova who is an ambulance volunteer with the Red Cross and has a university degree in linguistic mediation said she thought Nguyen was “just a normal guy” when they began writing to each other.
He eventually revealed his identity to her but by then, she said it was too late – she had already fallen for him. Nguyen’s death sentence was reduced to life imprisonment in 2008. Nguyen and his cohorts tried to smuggle more than eight kilograms of heroin Bali into Australia.
Finding out his identity did not deter Karpova, who flew to meet with him several times and said yes when he proposed. The couple have already set a wedding date – December 12 – but are well aware of the trials ahead.
