Two Vietnamese Americans named to top 100 list of most impactful Asians in culture

Vietnamese Americans Trinh Tran and Amanda Nguyen have been named to the prestigious Gold House A100 list of the most influential Asians and Asian-American and Pacific Islanders in culture for 2019.

Gold House is a nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the societal impact of people of Asian heritage. Tran and Nguyen are the two Vietnamese Americans on the list, which is selected every May in honor of AAPI Heritage Month.

Others named to the list include Kamala Harris, a U.S. senator from California and a 2020 presidential hopeful; Ted Lieu, a congressman from California; Google CEO Sundar Pichai; Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella; Olympic snowboarding gold medalist Chloe Kim; and the world’s top-ranked women’s tennis player, Naomi Osaka.

Tran is best known for her work at Marvel Studio, where she was an executive producer on both “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” She also served as associate producer on “Captain America: Civil War.”

Nguyen, an activist for social justice, was nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. She helped to draft the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights so that others would not have to experience the trauma she endured.

Nguyen was sexually assaulted in 2013 while a student at Harvard University. After fighting to have her rape kit — the forensic medical examination of rape victims after an assault — not destroyed after six months if an extension request weren’t filed, she decided to pursue changing the law in order to benefit her and other rape survivors.

Nguyen’s Bill of Rights was passed unanimously by both chambers of Congress in 2016 and was signed into law by President Barack Obama in October of that year. It also was an amendment to the Victims of Crime Act of 1984.

Nguyen works for Rise, a nonprofit she founded to help fellow sexual assault survivors. She also is training to become an astronaut.
