Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated many islands in the Philippines over the weekend, weakened to a category 1 storm before striking Vietnam.
The city of Hanoi and Vietnam’s northern provinces experienced substantial rainfall overnight, but mercifully less wind than has tragically befallen the Philippines, where an estimated 10,000 people are believed to have lost their lives.
“Typhoon Haiyan had been downgraded to a category 1 storm by the time it made landfall and all of our employees are safe,” said Richard Martin, CEO, Asia-Pacific, at Crawford. “They are currently mobilising to a number of locations, including Hainan Island where we have adjusters travelling to support insureds from the Chinese market who were also affected as the storm made its way northwards.”
