Southern Institute of Technology attracts Vietnamese

The Southern Institute of Technology is looking to expand its partnership with Vietnam.

Apprenticeship director La Quoc Phong has been in Invercargill talking to SIT about ways they can further increase the number Vietnamese students attending the polytechnic.


SIT marketing manager Chami Abeysinghe said Phong singlehandedly brought 30 students to the institution last year.


They were hoping to bring a further 100 this year, she said.


Historically New Zealand didn’t issue many visas to students from Vietnam but now SIT has the largest number of Vietnamese students for any institute of technology or polytechnic in New Zealand.


The increase of international students was “good for the community”.


“International education is the fifth biggest export for New Zealand,” Abeysinghe said.
