The Bluebonnet Ballroom was filled with attendees for the fifth annual One Night in Asia Talent Showcase, so much so that certain audience members stood at the back and to the sides of the room for the entire hour and a half long show because there were no seats left.

The Bluebonnet Ballroom allowed 100 extra chairs from last year’s event, which was held in the Rosebud Theater, and those seats still weren’t enough to contain the throngs of people Monday, said Rafael Viera, financing senior, Multicultural Mavericks member and event coordinator.

Viera said One Night in Asia is one of the most popular events of Asian Heritage Month hosted by the Multicultural Mavericks because it defies the generalizations and belittlement that people may make about others.

While some may think Asia is just China or Japan, the event showcases talent from groups representing various parts of Asia, such as India, the Philippines and Korea, Viera said.

Some members of the Asian organizations performing were not of Asian heritage at all.

The talent show, made up of 10 acts from various members of on-campus organizations, began with a speech from President Vistasp Karbhari, who is of Asian descent.
