Everyone knows someone affected by cancer, so when you give money to help cancer victims, you expect it will go to the the people who need it most. This is not the case for these four charities: Cancer Fund of America, Children’s Cancer Fund of America, Cancer Support Services and the Breast Cancer Society. A federal lawsuit alleges they scammed consumers out of more than $187 million for personal use in vacations, luxury items and other goods.

Children’s Cancer Fund of America and the Breast Cancer Society have entered into a settlement agreement and will be dissolved. Judgments against the groups and their executives total $137 million, and will be directed to the rightful recipient– cancer patients. If you’ve donated to these charities in the past, and are wary, experts say these sites will help make sure there’s transparency in where your money goes: CharityWatch.org, the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance or CharityNavigator.org.
