Following the tremendous success of last season’s sold-out performance of Beethoven’s “Razumovsky” Quartets, the Emerson String Quartet returns with a new all-Beethoven program to open the 25th season of chamber music at Segerstrom Center. The Emerson (violinists Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer, violist Lawrence Dutton and cellist Paul Watkins) stands apart in the history of string quartets with an unparalleled list of achievements over three decades: more than 30 acclaimed recordings, nine Grammy Awards (including two for Best Classical Album), three Gramophone Awards, the Avery Fisher Prize, Musical America’s Ensemble of the Year and collaborations with many of the greatest artists of our time. With the arrival of cellist Watkins in May of 2013, the Emerson String Quartet has embarked on a remarkable new journey – one filled with freshness, warmth and impressive accolades. Billy Childs: Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro

Jazz pianist and composer Billy Childs remains one of the most diverse and acclaimed artists working in music today. A three time Grammy winner and recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Childs is an inventive composer and arranger whose performances consistently expand the dimensions of the jazz genre. Childs’ program includes pieces from his new album of the same name and will be joined by guest vocalists Lisa Fischer, Becca Stevens and Moira Smiley. Hagen Quartet

Widely considered one of Europe’s leading quartets, the Hagen Quartet makes a long-awaited Center debut in a rare visit to the West Coast. The Hagen Quartet was founded in 1981. Its members include Lukas Hagen and Rainer Schmidt, violins; Veronika Hagen, viola and Clemens Hagen, cello. Its career has been rewarded with many prizes in chamber music competitions and an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon. The group is able to perform virtually an unlimited quartet repertoire from which the distinctive profile of the Hagens has emerged. Collaborations with artistic personalities such as Nikolaus Harnoncourt and György Kurtág are as important to the Hagen Quartet as its concert appearances with performers including Maurizio Pollini, Mitsuko Uchida, Sabine Meyer, Krystian Zimerman, Heinrich Schiff and Jörg Widmann. 8 p.m. Tickets: $29.
