The U.S. Department of Education is
43 giving states more than $21.5 million in grants to help low-income students
pay the fee required to take advanced placement tests.
Department
officials agreed to allocate the funds to help stimulate a college-like
atmosphere on high school campuses nationwide. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne
Duncan said that the courses, which can lead to college credit, help to
increase students’ study skills, hone their critical reasoning and help to
prepare them to enter college.
