Vietnamese American writer among those featured at Smithsonian

            Seven prominent Asian American will share their work at
the National Portrait Gallery, at the Smithsonian Institution, as part of the
convergence of Asian American literature and visual art.

            The writers will read and discuss their work in response
to “
Portraiture Now: Asian American Portraits of Encounter,” which is the
first major exhibit of Asian American visual artists at the Smithsonian
National Portrait Gallery.

            Those scheduled
to appear are: Bao Phi, poet, Minnesota;
David Henry Hwang, playwright,
California; Garrett Hongo, poet and author , Hawaii; Marie Myung-Ok Lee, author,
Rhode Island; Marianne Villanueva, author, California; Kazim Ali, poet and author;  and Anna Kazumi Stahl, author, Argentina.

            The event is
scheduled for April 14. A tour of the exhibit begins at 11:15 a.m., with the
readings, a panel discussion and book signing set from 12:15 to 5 p.m.

            It will take place at
the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium in the National Portrait Gallery, at the
intersection of Eighth Street and F Street Northwest in Washington, D.C. For
