Garden Grove Mayor Bao Nguyen ran his campaign on a promise of “transparency” and on Wednesday, the public got that in the form of a released audio recording between the mayor and police officer Sgt. Mike Viscomi. In the recording, which was done without Nguyen’s knowledge, the mayor calls Councilman Phat Bui a “f**cking dick” for the way he treated Nguyen in his early days as mayor.

The officer, Sgt. Mike Viscomi, is also the Garden Grove police union president. The two can be heard talking about the officer’s twin daughters and Nguyen’s consideration of whether to run for the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Loretta Sanchez.
City council members Tuesday voted in closed session to release the audio after word of its existence spread and residents began requesting it. Nguyen has responded, saying he did use “salty” language and that this was a distraction from the real issues at hand.
