Bird-flu hits close to home

If you think bird flu outbreaks only happen in Asia, think again. Wisconsin has declared a state of emergency over a bird flu outbreak.

Three flocks have become infected, and over 300,000 chickens, turkeys and mixed breed birds have been culled. Farmers have been forced to kill more than 2.4 million turkeys since March in other states such as Minnesota.

Since 2015, the H5N2 strain of bird flu have been found in 12 states, including Iowa, Idaho and Oregon to name a few. Bird flu attacks swiftly and infected poultry can kill within 48 hours.

Wisconsin’s state veterinarian requested up to 14 Guard personnel be made available for immediate assistance responding to the outbreak.
