Vietnamese survivor of AmTrak crash breaks his silence

Duy Nguyen, 39, is lucky to be alive after the AmTrak train derailed last week.  Nguyen, a Temple University associate professor of sociology said he was one of the first to be evacuated. He sustained a deep cut and required stitches. He also fractured three vertabrae.

He says he was on the phone with his wife when the crash occurred and he was thrown across the way. He says he was one of the first to arrive at the hospital and was fortunate he was sitting in the last car toward the rear.


Eight people died and over 200 were injured when the Amtrak train went into a turn at an estimated 106 miles per hour and derailed. The speed limit in that area is 50 mph. The engineer, Brandon Bostian, told investigators he doesn’t remember what happened leading up to the crash. Investigators are looking into the possibility of reports an object might have hit the train before it crashed, although Bostian did not report it.
