Would you pay $9 for banh mi? Some would, and happily

Food trucks are all the rage and one in particular, Dot Saigon, is making a name for themselves by serving up authentic, grandma-handed-down-Vietnamese recipes. Troy Hoang and Ellise Nguyen have created buzz with their pork belly banh mi, which uses Nguyen’s grandmother’s recipe. The secret sauce consists of soy sauce and sugar.

The food truck also features another of grandma’s recipe; this time with chicken. Nguyen said the chicken is marinated in a special blend of garlic, fried onion, sugar, soy sauce and is twice fried before it’s shredded for the sandwich. There’s a vegetarian option with the “Ellen” banh mi, which is made with marinated, fried tofu and mushroom pate. All banh mi are served on a french baguette made at a bakery in Alhambra.

Dot Saigon offers sweet potato fries, Vietnamese iced coffee as well as egg rolls made with shrimp and tofu. But don’t expect Little Saigon prices– their banh mi comes with a  $9 price tag. Bring your appetite! And wallet.
