The
Vietnamese government hopes to reduce the birth rate so that the population
will not exceed 93 million in 2015, according to media reports.
The
national program of population and family planning objectives for 2012 to 2015,
approved recently by the government, targets reducing the fertility rate from
two births per couple in 2010 to 1.9 in 2015.
The
population growth would be maintained at around 1 percent, while the sex ratio
at birth would not exceed 113 (113 boys to 100 girls), a wire service reported.
The
government will earmark $424 million for the program’s four projects, including
one for providing family planning services.
Another
project will help detect birth defects, diseases, and gender imbalance at birth
to improve the population’s physical quality.
Viet Nam’s population was 87.84 million last year.
