A New York Times report says al Qaeda was not behind the deadly September 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. compound in Benghazi, Libya.

The newspaper story contradicts what many in Congress and the White House have said about the attack. It also calls into question Republican accusations that Obama administration officials engaged in a cover-up of the incident.
The three main points of contention have been whether the attack was planned, whether it was sparked by an anti-muslim video – and whether al qaeda was involved.
