            Residents
of a mountainous district in the Central Highlands province of Quang Ngai are
naming their children after their favorite Korean actors and actresses, and
even mobile phone producers.

            Children
of the ethnic minority people of Ca Dong in Son Tay District now carry names
like Dinh Nokia, Dinh Motorola and Dinh Sam Sung. Meanwhile, those whose
parents are fans of South Korean television series have names like Dinh Ka Ki
Wel or Dinh Un Giun Zo.

            Le
Hoai Thanh, chief of Son Tay District’s education division, said it is the
parents’ right to name their children, but local authorities need to talk to
them about choosing names that are suitable to their traditional culture.

            About
two years before, local media also reported the trend of naming children after
Korean actors and actresses among the ethnic minority people of Co Tu in the
central province of Quang Nam.

            The
district’s authorities then organized activities to increase locals’ awareness
about naming their children in accordance with traditions, and these have
reportedly stemmed the trend.
