Some of
the best and brightest young minds in the Garden Grove Unified School District
will meet head to head for the 4th Annual Third Grade Math Bee on
Feb. 6 at 9 a.m. at the Edgar School/District Meeting Center, 6202 Cerulean
Ave., Garden Grove.
The free
event is open to the public.
The
districtwide competition features the top third-grade math students from all 46
GGUSD elementary schools who qualified either by winning their local school
math bee or being selected by teachers as the outstanding mathematician.
The victor
will be crowned “Grand Champion,” receive a certificate, and have his or her
name inscribed on a perpetual trophy for display at the winner’s school for the
next year.
During the
math bee, each question is projected on a screen, and contestants are given a
time limit in which to calculate and record their answer. An incorrect answer
results in immediate elimination.
Multiplication
problems based on state mathematics standards will be the focus of the contest.
The challenging topics covered in the questions include algebra, basic math
facts, problem solving and missing factors.
The math
bee was initiated a means to demonstrate the importance of mastering key
mathematical concepts in the early grades.
