Girls Tennis: Whippets hit the right notes against W.C. East

WEST GOSHEN — The music during the West Chester East football practice was blasting all the way down to the tennis courts.

“(The music) pumped me up,” Bradley said. “I was trying to stay focused on my match instead of listening to the jam.”



Bradley, Marissa Franklin and Grace Li Terramin did pump up the jam with their game on the court. The three led the Whippets (2-1 league) to a 5-2 victory over West Chester East in a Ches-Mont National Division match Tuesday.

Vietnam’s Internet Censorship Bill Goes Into Effect

Internet freedom has gone from bad to worse in Vietnam as an online censorship law known as Decree 72 went into effect this month. It bans bloggers and users of social media from quoting, gathering, or summarizing information from press organizations or government websites. While the main justification for the law is to uphold “national security,” Vietnamese authorities also claim that this law is aimed at combating online copyright infringement.

The law is packed with vague language, including bans on “abusing the provision and use of the Internet and information on the web” to “oppose the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” and “undermining the fine customs and traditions of the nation.” It requires filtering of all such offensive content, requires real-name identification for all personal websites and profiles, and creates legal liability for intermediaries such as blogs and ISPs for failing to regulate third-party contributors, triggering grave concerns about the law’s impact on domestic online service providers. In addition, the decree attempts to require all foreign and domestic companies that provide online services to cooperate with the government to take down prohibited content. For international companies without a business presence in Vietnam, the law would “encourage” them to establish offices or representatives in the country in order to hold them accountable for implementation of the decree.

Some supporters of Decree 72 also claim that the law could function as a means to fight content piracy. Vietnam is one of the 12 countries negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, and it’s unclear if that status has compelled authorities to embrace copyright enforcement as one of its functions, or if they are simply trying to further legitimize this already draconian law.

The year 11 student (pictured) from Cerdon College, Merrylands will be among 150 to visit a Perth desalination plant and planetarium during the National Youth Science Forum, which provides senior students with an insight into possible science careers.



Miss Tran’s keen interest in science extends to physics, chemistry and biology though she will be assigned to only one field during the forum.



“My favourite right now is probably physics because it’s very practical,” she said.

Exhibit at York Fair brings Vietnam vets together

The Vietnam Veterans Experience, a new attraction at this year’s York Fair, brings an acute reminder to visitors: There are lots of vets in the area who served during that turbulent time.

A map of Vietnam that the fair obtained from National Geographic is covered in more than 250 red pins that fairgoers have tacked on since Friday to represent their service. Some are even strewn throughout the sea for the Navy vets.

But no one wanted to place the first pin, said fair president Gene Schenck.

“Nobody wanted to be brash enough to be pin No. 1,” he said.

Where Creativity Lies: Vietnam From the Back of a Motorbike

When I told people I was visiting Vietnam for my next food adventure, I received some mixed responses. Vietnam is a vacation spot that’s either loved or hated; there’s no middle ground. Some acquaintances didn’t understand the attraction; others had been there while serving in the military and didn’t have fond memories of the place. It’s a destination I’d always wanted to visit, so I disregarded the naysayers.

It was off the beaten path and definitely not the typical vacation destination with pre-planned tour group opportunities. But that’s what I loved about Vietnam; it was full of the unexpected. I believe that life is all about making memories and experiencing new things, and that’s just what I did.



One of the many unexpected experiences was meeting American chef Chad Kubanoff, who has worked at some of the best restaurants in the United States, such as Alinea and Daniel. He opened a cooking and street food touring company called Back of the Bike Tours in Vietnam. The tour — given entirely on a motorbike — has taken Saigon by storm.

Bầu cử Thị Trưởng New York: De Blasio bất ngờ thắng lớn

 


NEW YORK CITY, NY. (CSM) – Ứng cử viên Bill de Blasio bất ngờ thắng lớn trong cuộc bầu cử sơ bộ của đảng Dân Chủ vào chức vụ thị trưởng thành phố New York hôm Thứ Ba, mặc dầu sẽ còn phải nhiều ngày mới có thể có kết quả chính thức.

Với 98% thùng phiếu đã kiểm, Blasio chiếm được 40.2% phiếu.


Nếu có một ứng cử viên được trên 40% sẽ không phải qua bầu cử vòng nhì. Tuy nhiên hãy còn lại hàng ngàn phiếu chưa đếm nên cuối cùng chưa thể biết Blasio có vượt qua được mức ấy không.

Chủ đề tranh cử của Blasio là hoàn toàn đi ngược lại đường lối của thị trưởng  Michael Bloomberg trong 12 năm qua.

Ở 5 quận thành phố New York, Blasio được phiếu ủng hộ của hầu hết các thành phần: nam và nữ, Công Giáo, Tin Lành, Do Thái, trình độ học vấn cao và thấp. Ông cũng được phân nửa phiếu cử tri LGBT, một thất bại nặng đối với ứng cử viên Christine Quinn, chủ tịch hội đồng nghị viên và là người đồng tính công khai.

Những  nhóm không dồn phiếu cho Blasio là dân gốc Phi Châu và gốc Á Châu vì có những ứng cử viên thuộc sắc tộc của họ. 


Về phía Cộng Hòa, ứng cử viên Joe Lhota, phó thị trưởng, thắng cử và như vậy có thể sẽ gặp Bill de Blasio trong cuộc bầu cử Thị Trưởng ngày 5 tháng 11 sắp tới.  (HC)

Family pulls together after 20-month-old diagnosed with cancer

When 20-month-old Taylor Grace Nguyen became sick, her parents knew it was much more severe than what doctors originally thought.

Still, neither Craig nor Shana Nguyen imagined their little girl would be handed the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia.



“We kept trying to convince ourselves we were just caught up in a nightmare and we would eventually wake up,” Shana said.



The Brainerd residents would soon find out just how real their situation was.



It all started with little Taylor Grace acting out of character. She cried when others touched her, treating her grandparents like strangers.

Aging Nations Look to Vietnam to Fill Nursing Gap

HANOI, VIETNAM — Two countries with the world’s oldest populations, Japan and Germany, are training geriatric nurses in Vietnam to help fill critical health care gaps at home.

This month, 100 young Vietnamese are heading to Germany as part of a new project to train geriatric nurses for work in the European country. The trainees have just finished a six-month language and culture course in Hanoi, and they will spend the next two years in a vocational training program. If they pass the final exam, they can work in Germany as fully qualified geriatric nurses.



One of them, 24-year-old Huong Thi Thi, said she is excited about the move. “In Germany there is modern medicine and nursing. In Vietnam, particularly caring for the elderly, is very new. I want to come to Germany to gain more knowledge and experience in caring for the elderly.”

Cổ phiếu Apple sáng Thứ Tư xuống 5% ở thị trường chúng khoán New York.

Từ tuần tới, máy điện thoại thông minh mới của Apple sẽ bắt đầu có bán ở Trung Quốc. Giá một máy iPhone-5C là $735 và iPhone-5S là $867. Giá này không ở mức trung bình như người ta đã dự doán và chờ đợi trong tình trạng cạnh tranh gay gắt giữa các công ty điện tử hiện nay.

Ngoài ra, các chuyên viên phân tích nhận xét rằng về hình thức, kiểu máy mới được phát hành với nhiều màu sắc nhưng không có thêm nhiều chức năng đặc biệt.

VN, Japan traditional costumes fuse in local collection

Local designer Thuan Viet’s collection which highlights the fuse of “ao dai” (traditional Vietnamese long gown) and the Japanese kimono was showcased to local audiences before being taken to Japan during the Vietnam – Japan cultural exchange from Sept 11 to 25.

The exchange program will see the collection featured in five major Japanese cities, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Nagoya.

Viet will showcase three collections titled “Snowy Flowers”, “The Far East Pearl” and “The Vietnam beauty” which accentuate the fuse of the two countries’ traditional and cultural beauties.

His “Snowy flowers” features Japanese spring flowers created with the Vietnamese hand embroidery art on the white silk of the Vietnamese “ao dai”. The three principal colors are black, white and red which are typical of the Asian culture.

Hanoi: 200 students off school because of hacker

The Police Department for High-tech Crime Prevention of Hanoi has identified the one who penetrated into the electronic communication software system of the Ha Dinh Primary School in Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi, to send false messages that made nearly 200 students absent from school.

A police officer said yesterday that the hacker was identified and he admitted guilt.

“The hacker is an electronic communication software programmer for schools in Hanoi. Upon detecting a gap in the software that is used by Ha Dinh school, this person infiltrated and sent false messages to parents of students in order to destroy the reputation of the opponent company, which provided the software to Ha Dinh School,” said the police officer.

Đại tá Abdullah Al Zaydi, phát ngôn viên của Lực Lượng Đặc Nhiệm Hỗn Hợp ở Benghazi cho biết vụ nổ rất mạnh, phá hủy chiếc xe chở bom và làm sập một phần lớn mặt tiền của tòa nhà. Chi nhánh Ngân Hàng Trung Ương Libya ở kế cận cũng bị tổn hại và một nhân viên bảo vệ bị thương nhẹ.

Vì vụ nổ bom vào buổi quá sớm nên không gây tổn thất nhân mạng. Nếu xảy ra chỉ một giờ sau đó, khi đông đảo mọi người đi làm việc, chắc chắn sẽ có nhiều nạn nhân.

Trong ít ngày gần đây, Hoa Kỳ đã triển khai lực lượng đề phòng vấn đề an ninh trước ngày kỷ niệm 12 năm khủng bố tân công Hoa Kỳ. Chambord Castle is a masterpiece built in the 16th century during the reign of Francois. This is a striking castle of the nearly 100 castles located in the Loire region of France, on the trans- European road, near the city of Tours – a place associated with President Ho Chi Minh.

The fashion show attracted the presence of the Vietnamese and Singaporean ambassadors to France and many local officials.

Nhà ngoại giao Dmitry Vishernev, đệ nhất tham vụ tòa đại sứ Nga tại thủ phủ Sukhumi của vùng Abkhazia, bị bắn chết khi đang rời khỏi nhà ở nơi này, theo tin cảnh sát Abkhaz cho hãng thông tấn Interfax hay. Trung Quốc siết chặt kiểm soát trang mạng xã hội

 

BẮC KINH (AP) – Chính quyền Trung Quốc nay siết chặt hơn nữa việc kiểm soát các trang mạng xã hội, cảnh cáo rằng ai phổ biến các bản post bị coi là có tính cách mạ lị và được phát tán hơn 500 lần sẽ có thể bị án tới 3 năm tù.

Tân Hoa Xã, cơ quan thông tấn nhà nước Trung Quốc, cho hay các giới chức ngành tư pháp nói rằng luật mới cũng sẽ áp dụng cho những người có post được ít nhất 5,000 người đọc.

Luật mới được công bố hôm Thứ Hai, được đưa ra trong lúc nhà cầm quyền Trung Quốc đang mở chiến dịch để đối phó với tình trạng mà họ gọi là “tin đồn trên mạng,” tuy nhiên những người tranh đấu ở Trung Quốc coi đây là hình thức ngăn cản tự do ngôn luận. Mỹ cảnh cáo mối đe dọa võ khí hóa học của Bắc Hàn

 

BẮC KINH (AP) – Một giới chức Mỹ cho hay biện pháp quân sự nhắm vào Syria sẽ làm Bắc Hàn phải suy tính cẩn thận trong việc sử dụng võ khí nguyên tử.

Thứ Trưởng Quốc Phòng James Miller hôm Thứ Ba nói rằng một cuộc trừng phạt quân sự nhắm vào chính quyền Syria sẽ duy trì các quy luật quốc tế là không được sử dụng võ khí hóa học. Ông Miller cho hay đã nói với các giới chức Trung Quốc rằng việc lơ là trong vấn đề sử dụng võ khí hóa hoc sẽ khiến các binh sĩ Mỹ dễ gặp nguy hiểm hơn và đe dọa an ninh thế giới.

Trung Quốc chống lại dự tính tấn công quân sự của Mỹ và đồng minh vào Syria để trừng phạt chế độ Assad vì đã dùng võ khí hóa học hôm 21 Tháng Tám gần thủ đô Damascus khiến hơn 1,400 người thiệt mạng.

Bộ Trưởng Quốc Phòng Mỹ Chuck Hagel cũng cảnh cáo rằng Bắc Hàn hiện có một kho võ khí hóa học khổng lồ, đe dọa Nam Hàn và 28,000 lính Mỹ đồn trú nơi đây. (V.Giang)

Trường Princeton đứng đầu các đại học Mỹ

 

WASHINGTON (AP) – Báo US News & World Report vừa chọn trường đại học Princeton University là trường tốt nhất nước Mỹ, đồng thời cũng chọn trường University of California-Berkeley là trường đại học công lập hàng đầu.

Danh sách sắp hạng hàng năm của US News & World Report, công bố hôm Thứ Ba, nói rằng đại học Harvard đứng hàng thứ nhì, kế đó là Yale University. Việc sắp thứ hạng được dựa theo các tiêu chuẩn như điều kiện tuyển chọn, số phần trăm sinh viên tiếp tục học vấn cũng như mức tốt nghiệp.

Trường Ðại Học Columbia University đứng hàng thứ tư, và Stanford University cùng University of Chicago đứng hàng thứ năm. Ba trường đồng hạng bảy là Duke University, MIT và University of Pennsylvania.

Hai trường California Institute of Technology và Dartmouth College đồng hạng 10 trong danh sách của US News & World Report. (V.Giang)
